2007 Term 2
7th June 2007
Mary group’s Pin hole cameras.

First we had to spray paint the inside of the cameras black so the light does not get inside of the pin hole cameras because the photo paper is very sensitive to light. We made the cameras out of tins. There were two kinds of tins rectangular tins and cylindrical. We made holes on the side of the cameras. We put green or blue tape on the holes, it was our decision. We had to go into the dark room for the photos to develop. It was a bit hard but it was fun. Graeme, Bronwyn’s husband, was responsible for teaching us how to make the cameras. It was great. Thank- you Graeme.

Time and tide……………
In our group we are continuing to think about time, times and timing. Graeme Gilmour has taught us how to make pin-hole cameras which are being used to take photos – timing for the correct exposure is very important.
We are looking at seeds, most of which have come from our lunches, and timing how long it takes them to germinate. We are hoping to plant some of them outside once they have reached a suitable size and the weather is friendly. We are learning times tables, playing tables tiggy and times tables dominoes.
We have worked out the pattern in Roman numerals, found out that the word ‘calculate’ comes from the Latin word for ‘pebble’ and are looking at place value – some of us are working with numbers in the millions.
We are learning analogue time and reading a book about time travel. Individual projects are taking shape and cover such topics as ‘history of fashion’, ANZACS, ‘tactics of the two world wars’, ‘medieval life’, ‘the history of clocks’ – to mention but a few. We are discovering the importance of 0.

23rd April 2007

In our group this term we are studying ‘Times and Timing’ which includes learning about analogue and digital time, the history of numbers, inventions, designing and making mechanical toys, clockwork, and doing projects of our own choosing within the ‘Times and Timing’ theme. We are in the process of making analogue clock faces using our compasses and protractors and have made the discovery that there are ninety degrees in a quarter of an hour.

2007 Term 1
26th February 2007

In our group we have continued to check out the various types of camouflage and their natural and intended use. Peter came along last Friday to chat to us about camouflage in the animal world. We have discovered how tricky it is to learn tricks so that your audience is actually tricked. Tom came in and mesmerised us with a few magic tricks, which looked impossible – then he told us that it took up to eight months to get them that way! We have looked at magnets and electrons with John – how do you remove iron filings from magnets???? We have learned what causes static electricity and decorated our windows with balloons. We have learned more about the parts of a circle, right angles and tangrams. We are starting to investigate how our eyes work and some of our optical illusions are spooky!! We are off to Phillip Island on Monday 26th to visit Amazin’ Things and, hopefully, have a paddle.

12 February 2007

This term our theme is ELECTRICKERY. We are learning about electricity, camouflage, magic tricks, optical illusions, how our eyes function and all things which might not be what they seem. We are making masks to help us to change our identity and will be watching the weather with interest. We are enjoying science lessons with Callan’s great uncle, John, and have been introduced to atoms and electrons.
